What is the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition?
The AGHE B&A Committee's Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition is a global competition open to all higher education students and faculty for encouraging the development of products, services, and ideas for individuals ages 50+ in all sectors of the longevity economy. It is open globally to institutions of higher education (community college, college, university, and faculty). Pitches are submitted electronically and finalists, who may attend the AGHE Annual meeting, will give their final pitch via the internet.
Who can submit a pitch? An individual? A team?
The Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition is open all students enrolled at the community college level through graduate school regardless of discipline. Faculty may also apply. Awards will be presented at each level. Teams may be made of groups of multiple educational levels but teams will be judged at the highest educational level. Individuals are also welcome to submit individual pitches.
How many pitches may an individual educational institution submit?
The AGHE B&A Committee will accept all pitch applications from an individual university, college, or community college. The B&A committee is encouraging institutions to advertise the competition to faculty and students, including working cross-discipline on the competition. The B&A committee also recommends building the competition into fall courses. The TOOLBOX continues adding resources assisting with curriculum development and of course, faculty/students may contact the committee for additional assistance (see Contact Us).
I heard about the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition, but I’m not part of the university’s gerontology program. I’m in another discipline. May I (or my students) still participate?
Yes, the AGHE B&A Committee for the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition wants individuals from all disciplines interested in issues of the 50+ and the growing opportunities that come with the global longevity economy to participate in the pitch competition. Interdisciplinary teams are also encouraged including partnering, if desired, with a gerontology program if the institution houses one. The B&A Committee also encourages individuals, faculty, and students to join AGHE and/or attend the AGHE Annual Meeting, March 1-4, 2018 in Atlanta, GA. I’m worried about the cost for my students participating in the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition. Many of them can’t afford the travel costs.
The Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition is a virtual pitch competition making it open to all college students and faculty regardless of location! All pitch submissions will be downloaded to YouTube and the two-page business plan will be emailed to the committee. The final judging will be virtual via Google Hangouts, so the cost should be negligible to those with computer access. Information on how to submit pitches will be provided upon sign up for the competition. The B&A Committee does invite all to attend the AGHE Annual Meeting, March 1-4, 2018 in Atlanta, GA. What is required in the AGHE Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition submission?
The following is required for a complete Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition submission:
First sign up for the competition to get updates and details on using the Business and Aging Committee's YouTube channel
Two-page Executive Summary (details to assist teams will be added in TOOLBOX. There is no set format)
Three-minute Pitch downloaded to the private Youtube Channel. A YouTube channel has been established for submissions.All registered teams will be provided the link to the channel.

I’d like to have my students participate in the AGHE Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition, but I have no idea of how to teach this or write the Executive Summary?
The AGHE B&A Committee continues working and adding information to make it easier for faculty and students interested in adding the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition to their classes or for those developing an idea on their own or with a team. The Pitch TOOLBOX is there to help you and is being augmented with readings, exercises, webpages, pitch ideas, and more regularly. Ideas are being posted on AGHEConnect that is available to AGHE members. For those at institutions, not currently AGHE institutions click the 'SIGN UP' button on the homepage and you will be notified when new material is added.
How will the submissions in the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition be judged?
The Official Rules, Requirements, and Judging Criteria for the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition provides the judging criteria for the Executive Summary Evaluation and the Oral Presentation. Judges will provide evaluations via email for all submissions on April 30, 2018 by 5:00 pm EDT. No evaluations will be provided for any submissions until the completion of the competition. There will be two points at which a submission may be judged.
Round 1: All Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition Submissions submitted to the AGHE B&A Committee by Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at firstname.lastname@example.org will be judged. Those invited to participate in the 2nd Pitch Competition Round will be notified by Friday, February 9, 2018 and names will be posted on the website.
Round 2: Finalists notified in February from Round 1 will be invited to participate in the Final Vitual Pitch Competition Round on March 3, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. EST. The Pitch will be a virtual pitch via Google Hangouts.Information will be sent to each participant prior to the competition, confirming participation and providing instructions for using Google Hangouts.The original Executive Summary will move forward with the participant.
Information on the judges will be posted in the fall.
I’m worried that for my students (or me) participating Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition, their (my) original idea(s) may be pilfered or copied by others who hear their Pitches. How is the AGHE Business & Aging Committee protecting their original work?
The Official Rules, Requirements, and Judging Criteria for the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition provides the complete statement on original work. The short answer is due to the nature of the competition, the committee is not able to ask judges, reviewers, staff, or the audience to sign non-disclosure statements. The committee will make every effort to limit distribution of the Executive Summary Business Plans. It is expected that all submitted materials be the original work of the participants.
I’m interesting in participating in the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition but I don’t know of any AGHE affiliated faculty at my university to provide an endorsement. How can I still participate?
The Official Rules, Requirements, and Judging Criteria for the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition require the endorsement of a faculty advisor. If a student (or faculty) wants to find out whether an institution is an AGHE member, they may go to https://www.aghe.org/membership/current-members to check. Students (or faculty) do not need to belong to AGHE to participate in the 2018 AGHE Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition or to provide the endorsement. Institutions interested in finding out benefits AGHE brings an institution to consider becoming a member are invited to visit the AGHE website.
I want to enter the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition, but I don’t speak English. Is there a way to still enter?
The judging will be completed in English so all official documents and the Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition must be completed in English. However, all team members are not required to speak English, so foreign teams might consider having an English-speaking member when building their team.
I'm interested in coming to the AGHE Annual meeting. Where can I find the information on the meeting?

The Global Business of Aging Pitch Competition
A recent TIME article noted that “Global business wouldn’t think of ignoring China. Nearly all of the Fortune 500 companies have a presence there” (Kadle, March 14, 2016; http://www.globalcoalitiononaging.com/index.php?id=your-longevity-is-good-for-business). The article notes the global 50+ aged-market offers as many if not more opportunities than the Chinese market. Savvy businesses, marketers, and entrepreneurs are targeting new products and services to this global 50+ aged-market.
Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) members know that these ‘new’ older adults are not the same as past generations. The 2018 AGHE Annual Meeting “The Global Business of Aging” highlights the increasing and substantial economic value older adults contribute to the global economy. Those 50+ in the U.S. have money and spend money. Boomers account for over half of all expenditures or $3 trillion of spending and it’s not all in the health care and long term care industry. Plus, this isn’t simply limited to the U.S. It’s a global phenomenon.

Dr. Lisa Hollis-Sawyer, Co-chair
Business & Aging Committee
Dr. Lisa Hollis-Sawyer received her Ph.D. in Industrial Gerontology from The University of Akron (Akron, Ohio). Her training relates to business and aging through her expertise in applying aging issues to the workplace and the broader community (e.g., aging and consumer-direction in aging services). She has researched and written articles and book chapters on issues related to aging and business from both longevity economy and “aging in place” perspectives. An aging society will change the “face” of the workforce and business.
Dana Burr Bradley, Ph.D., is the director of the Center for Gerontology and professor of public health at Western Kentucky University. She completed her Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University as a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellow and has worked extensively on generational and longevity economy policy issues. A fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, she is currently the AGHE treasurer. Additionally, she served as past president of the Southern Gerontological Society and secretary of the GSA.
Dr. Janice I. Wassel, Chair

Dr. Janice Wassel's Dual PhD Degree in Demography and Sociology is from The Pennsylvania State University. She is the Academic Dean of the American Institute of Financial Gerontology, (AIFG), an international financial education institute. She joined Western Kentucky University as a Senior Research Scholar upon retirement from UNCG. Interests in business opportunities of the aging society resulted in her international consulting enterprise, Aging is Good Business. An AGHE and GSA Fellow, she is also past-president of the Southern Gerontological Society.
